Still not going for it

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

Some of my distant relatives are very health conscious and they often go for colon cleansers for weeks on end. I've been encouraged to do so but I just can't bring myself to do it.

They kept reassuring me that once I get started and get used to it after a few times, it is actually not as bad as I think. They are probably right but it's always the hardest to take the first step.

And up to now, I still haven't gotten the courage to take that first step. So scared!!

Never evern forget to renew your health insurance

Tuesday, August 10, 2010

A couple of days ago I suddenly realised that I forgot to renew my son's medical card policy. I blame myself for it as I was sent the reminder and I didn't do anything about it. Now I gotta go find the letter and quickly go do what I need to do.

It's important for us to keep our medical insurance active at all times. It's something we can't afford to miss out on. But a good insurance company will do their job quite well in sending reminders and even find ways to help you renew the policy easily and conveniently. The one I'm with is not that good in this area, I must say. They've only sent me one communication thus far and they're remained quiet.

Do shop around for different health insurance quotes too before you settle for the one that suits you best. I know they may not differ a lot from one policy to another in terms of what they cover, but you just never know who can offer a great deal.

I got my son's policy at a very good deal. Just that the service level is not up to my standard. But I suppose for now it's not very crucial.

Anyway, I better go and set a reminder to do this first things first!

Supper guilt

Friday, July 16, 2010

Urgh...I feel so guilty. Been snacking late at night. I stopped eating supper some time already but recently I started again. It's not because I'm hungry, just feel like eating while I'm working. Not good for me, I know, working late into the night and eating so late some more! Tsk tsk tsk!

I've threwn out the bottle of Clarins fat burners oil a few months ago. If I still have it, I'd probably be using it. Hehe.

I think I will have to suppress my urge to eat supper. It's not hard for me to do, just that I never really said no before. But now that I start to feel guilty and bad about it, I'd better stop already!

Good durian

Sunday, July 11, 2010

Just had some large seeds of durian, packed from yesterday at the SS2 Durian Buffet. They are really good and tasty. But it surely comes pricey, just 2 fruits cost us RM45. And they are not exceptionally large, but I've got to say the size of each seed is sufficient and satisfying.

I ate so many today that it's actually quite out of the norm. I normally just have 3 to 4 max, but I had a lot more than that today because I couldn't stop. Yeah, that good. It's my second time having it in a span of less than a month.

Can't continue having too much of durian because it's real fattening. Don't want to go for diet pills like apidexin after eating too much durian. Not that worth it though the taste is great :)

Would you do a colon cleanse?

Monday, May 31, 2010

I've been bugged many times by many family members that I should start using some colon cleanse products as a way to detox and stay healthy. I just can't bring myself to do such programs.

Anyone out there has anything to say about them? I tend to think those who constantly push me to do them are biased on their views. Maybe I can get some neutral ones here...anybody?

Feeling the heat coming on

Saturday, May 15, 2010

Just today I suddenly felt that my body is exceptionally warm. Next thing I know, my lips feel dry and rather painful, like how it is when it is heaty. My throat seems drier too. It feels like the hot spell is coming...but this is no time for me to fall ill, I have a lot I need to set out to do for the rest of the month.

So better start popping those vitamins and be careful with my diets too. A pity to get sick now!

No guts

Saturday, March 06, 2010

I have been invited several times by some relatives to go join them for some colon cleanser sessions. I really don't dare to go for such programs. I don't feel very comfortable at all. The thought and idea of the process itself scares me. I wonder how some people actually enjoy it and even get hooked on it!

Know nothing

Saturday, February 20, 2010

I know nothing about diet pills like phentermine. A friend I know is attempting to go for it even though I was trying to discourage her. I don't think there are really any such pills that don't bring about some negative side effects. What say you?

Why wreck your health and maybe even your life just to lose a couple of extra pounds, huh?

Simple solution

Saturday, January 23, 2010

Once in a while, my little one develops some red itchy spots on his body and asks us to help him scratch, especially when the itch develops on his back. And most of the time, this kind of itch develops only at night.

Then it occured to me that maybe he's allergic to the sheets. It does make sense that he itches more often at night when he's lying on the bed than other times then, doesn't it?

If that's true, I guess the solution is simple, just find out some anti-allergy bedding products and change our sets to those. But I suppose these stuff don't come cheap too. But it's worth a try where my little boy is concerned.

Anyone has tried any of these?

No cure for eczema

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

Some friends of mine whose kids suffer from eczema have asked if I know of any effective eczema treatment. What I've learned thus far is that there really is no cure for eczema once it develops.

It is unfortunate that my little boy developed slight eczema when he was just a month old. But the doctor prescribed him some cream called Elomet which works wonders for him.

However, we still have to monitor his condition very closely so that it doesn't get any worse. My hope is that it goes away with careful monitoring and mangement of his condition. I heard that if by the age of 4, children who have skin problems that don't go away will most likely have eczema for life.

That's so sad isn't it?

Multivitamins just for guys?

I was browsing the supplement shelves at one of the pharmacies the other day and was surprised when one of the sales assistant came up to me to introduce something new to me - men's multivitamin. I was taken aback as I didn't expect vitamins to be so gender specific.

But since I was rushing and didn't have time to linger and listen to all that she wanted to explain, I didn't find out much about it. But hey, interesting to know for sure!

Sleeping lots more

Did I ever say how late I used to sleep as a result of trying to run 2 businesses and hold a job last year? I was sometimes just sleeping for 3 to 4 hours and I was warned by my facial lady that I seriously need to sleep to get rid of those terrible eye bags and I may need to start looking for the best anti wrinkle cream now instead of later if I keep up that kind of late nights!

Well this year I'm no longer holding on to that full time job so I'm only just running 2 businesses. So at least I get more time to spread between the two. I am getting more sleep as a result too because I won't need to work late into the night.

I do feel better and healthier and I think I should keep this up. But I have to admit that once or twice in a week I do find myself rather busy and sleeping late still. Guess it's time management put to the test for me now.

Been learning how to manage my time better too. According to one of the audio programs I listen to, the expert on time management says that the way to achieve good time management is to get better at what we do so that we do it quicker and more efficiently. Makes sense I guess.

CNY is approaching and I have yet to start doing the shopping. Guess gotta take one of these few weekends to start already. Weekdays are now too precious to go shopping! :)

All naturale please...

Saturday, January 02, 2010

Someone came up to me the other day and asked if I can spare some minutes listening to her explain about a hgh supplement she's selling from a reputable health product company. Reputable or not, I wasn't interested. I'd rather age gracefully.

I don't know if I should feel insulted since she approached me. Do I look like I need hgh supplement right now? Hmm...doesn't matter. I don't think I should choose to feel insulted. This year is a brand new one for me and I intend to live everyday feeling positive.

How has your new year been so far? I'm looking forward to start working on my career come Monday :) And you know what? If I do look a little more matured, it might actually be an advantage to my new career...hmm...food for thought there :P

How much are you willing to spend on a vacuum cleaner?

Sunday, September 20, 2009

Some years back when I was heavily pregnant, someone recommended me to listen to his friend talk about some super good vacuum cleaner. Apparently it has some superior central vacuum system that helps cleaning and purifying the air in the rooms.

We took about half an hour to be introduced to it, with a demo included. We were impressed for sure, but we didn't buy it although the sales pitch focused on how good it will be to keep the air and rooms clean for a new addition in the family.

The reason we didn't buy is because the vacuum cleaner costs some RM5,000. No matter how much I would love to keep everything clean and purified for my family, I'm not willing to part with that money.

How much are you willing to spend on a vacuum cleaner?

Losing weight

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

I've been pigging out quite a bit, snacking every now and then and not really caring that I might put on some love handles. I thought I would surely put on a little even if not a lot, at the rate I've been snacking and sometimes even having late and heavy dinners. But funnily enough, I find that I'm actually losing weight!

Some of my clothes are feeling a little loose on me and I even need a belt for several of my belts! I suppose lots of mothers would like to be losing weight naturally like this while keeping up with all those meals and snacks. So I should be counting my blessings, huh? At least I don't need to spend on buying some best diet pills in an attempt to love the post pregnancy weight :)

I'm pigging out

Monday, April 20, 2009

I don't know why but the last few weeks saw me pigging out a lot. I could be quite full from a heavy meal but give me 2 to 3 hours later, I feel like having a snack. Sometimes, it's not just a small snack like a bar of chocolate or some chips, but a rather filling meal at tea time. It scares me!

No, I'm not pregnant if that's what you're wondering. If I am and pigging out like that, I won't be that worried. It's because I'm not pregnant but continue to have such appetite that makes me a little worried. Maybe I'm just being greedy. I know that if I keep this up, I'm going to balloon up in no time.

So I better do something about this. Either stop all that binging or go on some appetite suppressants! I don't quite like the latter, so I'd better be disciplined enough to stop myself. It could be the stress that's causing me to snack like this, so first thing I could do is to keep my stress level in check!

Is three bars of Snickers a lot of chocolate for a week?

Tuesday, March 03, 2009

I happen to pop by Guardian with a colleague today and discovered that their big sales had just begun. There were several items that were really great buys, but since I'm a little more disciplined when it comes to shopping these days, I only bought my necessities. Actually, I only bought 2 items - my little boy's Eubos Cream Bath Oil and some chocolates for myself.

You see, whenever I'm stressed, I feast on chocolates. And I've been super stressed at work for a couple of weeks now. So I'm perpetually snacking on chocolates over the weeks. I bought 3 bars of Snickers at Guardian just because they were on promotion and it was easy for me to reach for a pack of them while queueing up to pay at the cashier's counter.

My colleague's eyes nearly popped out when she saw me buying the chocolate bars. Because just last week, she was with me when I bought two bars. When I was taking a bite into my first bar this afternoon, she asked me to report to her what my weight is once I'm done with all my chocolates at the end of this week.

I don't have any weighing scale to check, and even if I did, I won't bother using it. Unless of course I'm seriously outgrowing my clothes, then I'd be concerned. But right now, putting on weight by eating too much chocolate really isn't my biggest concern. Sure, I don't want to have to resort to taking weight loss pills to lose weight if I balloon up, but my stress level is just too high for me to think about cutting down on chocolates and not getting fat! :(

Am I really snacking excessively on chocolates? Is there any other better and healthier way for me to snack whenever I am stressed? Anyone, any help?

FIP - the silent killer

Saturday, March 01, 2008

A week ago all 3 of my cats were down with fever and viral infection. I couldn't get them to take their medication because I can't open up their jaws and pop the pill in. They would keep their jaws firmly shut. So I tried mixing the smashed pill into their food. It didn't work too because they had no appetite. After 2 days, I realised I had to send them back to the vet because they weren't eating and drinking. Prue and Phoebe appeared weak while Piper was still a little active and managed to eat some too.

When we got to the vet, Prue was so limp and lifeless. I was worried sick about her. I wanted to leave them at the vet's for a few days so that he could monitor their progress and most importantly, he is able to get them to swallow the pills. The vet promised to keep me updated of their condition and I left feeling quite satisfied now that I know they're in better hands than mine.

The next day, the vet called and said Phoebe was not looking good. She had laboured breathing and refused food. She was lying down all the time too. Prue, on the other hand appeared better. He asked for permission to do an X-Ray on Phoebe and I immediately consented to it. True enough, something was wrong. The vet found that part of her lung was filled with water, and so is her abdomen. This, he said, could be two possibilities - pneumonia or FIP (feline infectious peritonitis). He said the proten level in the fluid found in her abdomen showed high levels of protein, which then made him suspect that she's suffering from FIP.

I froze when I heard that. FIP is deadly and it kills quickly. My Phoebe is only 4 years old, turning 5 in a month. All sorts of things raced in my mind - how, when, what, WHY???

The vet told me that he'll run another test the following day to test the protein level to confirm it. There was nothing else to do but agree. I asked if FIP is contagious and to my dismay, he said yes. If Phoebe has it, most likely Piper and Prue would have it, too.

The whole night, I was in a state of shock. What if, what if....I know I can't handle the death of any of my cats. Especially if it has to happen when they're so young. But fearing the worst, I had to prepare myself for it and to be strong.

I believe in karma and rebirth. The only consolation I was able to give myself was that if Phoebe is diagnosed with FIP, it's beause God has got plans for her. Perhaps she only needs to serve a few short years in this lifetime as a cat and gets to rebirth into a better place, better realm. With this theory, I was surprisingly calm and ready to let go without feeling too much pain.

Today I popped over to the vet's to see what the results are. I had to wait for a long time as the vet was in the midst of performing surgery. While I waited, I was actually surprise that I felt no nervousness. It will be ok when he tells me the bad news. I was all ready for it. I only wanted to know what I can do next, to help ease Phoebe's pain and how much time we have.

Finally it was time to meet him. What he said still rings in my ears...and these were his words: "I measured the protein level and it has maintained, without climbing up. She is also responding to one of the antibiotics I'm giving her. A FIP positive cat does not respond to antibiotics. So we can rule out FIP at this moment."

No one will ever understand the kind of relieve and happiness I felt in my heart! It felt so unreal...but it felt so good! Then he took Phoebe into the room and really, I've never felt happier at seeing her! She was more active, meowing away and wanting to run away from the vet's grip. It was all good signs, because it means she's active again! In my heart, as I watched her, I thanked God again and again.

There is a vaccination against FIP and I was pretty sure I gave it to he girls. Certainly, you would never know if they can still contract it. But for peace of mind, I urge all pet lovers to give your loved ones any kind of vaccination that's recommended against fatal viruses. It's really not pleasant having to go through what I went through. Never take the presence of your pets for granted. They seem to be there for you all the time but when they get snatched away from you suddenly, it really hurts.

I'm lucky that Phoebe is alright. I don't ever want to go through this again. Which is why the vet wants me to give them their AIDS vaccination. After this frightening episode, I don't think I will say no to this.

The ginger-coloured one is Phoebe, the white is Piper and Prue is the brown/black one.

Worst blood test experience ever! - Updated.

Sunday, June 11, 2006

One of the things I hate most is to have needles stuck into me. Yesterday I had to do a medical check that included a blood test. I was already nervous enough about it, but seeing how the doctor operated scared me even more. All throughout the medical check, he was OK. He asked me a series of health questions, took my blood pressure and made me read some coloured numbers to check if I'm colour blind. Then, he came to the final part - drawing my blood.

He adjusted his glasses and squinted to have a look at my right arm to find a vein. I have to admit it was quite hard to see the vein. I offered him my left arm, saying that it was much clearer and from past experiences, I normally had blood drawn from that arm. He took a look and said "No la, it's the same".

So he began wrapping up my right arm and I turned away. I felt the prick of the needle and wished he could hurry up and finish. It felt like an eternity. I could feel him drawing the syringe and I tried to think of what pleasant things I could be doing after that examination. But it wasn't enough to take my mind off the sharp pain.

After a while, he said it's done BUT...it wasn't enough blood. He showed me the tube that held my blood and it wasn't even a quarter filled. I was horrified when he said "You need to do this again, not at the same place. Somewhere else". He looked at me quizzically from head to toe, as if looking for a body part he could draw blood from! He totally freaked me out.

I quickly offered him my left arm again and tried to convince him it'll work. Having not much choice, he agreed. I turned away again and felt the prick in my other arm. This time, I heard him say "Ahh, this arm is very good. So always remember ah, next time do blood test must do on left arm". In my heart, I was thinking "I told you but you didn't believe me!!"

Finally, it was over. I don't know if it's psychological or it's because I'm anemic, but I immediately felt faint and close to vomitting. I didn't utter a word to the doctor because I can't afford to fail this medical examination.

I quickly left his office. When I was in the lift, I saw my reflection in the mirror and I was as pale as a ghost. I was surprised he didn't see it. I got into the car and sat there for minutes until I was better.

That was not all. I think the doctor had injured the vein in my right arm. About an hour after I left the clinic, I noticed a bruise on the area where I was pricked. I know it's quite common that people get a light bruise after a blood test so I ignored it. But hours later, the bruise was getting bigger. When I woke up this morning, I found it even larger than last night, and it hurts when I press against the area. Look at this:

See the whole purplish patch? How bad is this?

I don't think I can stand up to another blood test anytime in the near future. You'd have to drag my dead body into the clinic to get my blood! I do regret that I didn't insist on having the blood drawn on my left arm the first time. So I blame myself too for having to do this twice. To everyone else, if you know your "sweet spot", please insist on doing it right the first time round.

Update:
My bruise got worse, so I went to another doctor to check it out. He said clearly my vein has been punctured during all that pricking and my blood is "leaking" out of my vein and depositing right beneath my skin layer. Thus the ugly bruise. He gave me some medication to help with the bleeding and to subside the bruise.

Ain't this ugly?

Do I look like I've been abused?!

Hope this medicine helps.

I wanna learn some moves

Monday, June 05, 2006

On Saturday night, we went with J to Little Havana because J had wanted to do salsa. Not knowing what salsa really was, we accompanied her to the salsa club and it wasn’t a complete waste of our time even though we didn’t hit the dance floor.

We watched and admired some good salsa dancers, learned the names of various other dances that we normally could not differentiate one from the other, and even thought maybe we should learn some salsa moves for the sake of doing one dance during the wedding! But no, I don’t think that’s happening because with just about 3 spins and twirls, I would’ve blacked out from feeling dizzy.

Earlier in the day we were at The Curve and Fitness First was running a campaign on their Group Exercise classes. I watched in fascination the Body Jam session and was immediately inspired to take it up. It’s been years since I did something as vigorous as this. My last “dance” was some 3 or 4 years back doing line dancing with a bunch of colleagues. I thought that was fun too but Body Jam seems more dynamic and definitely a better and proper work-out. It's about time I pick up my lazy bones and make them work.

Anyone out there who’s currently doing Body Jam and ready to spare me some advise?
